Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) are specialised tests used to evaluate nerve and muscle function. These tests help diagnose nerve damage, muscle disorders, and neuromuscular junction conditions.
At Brisbane Clinical Neuroscience Centre (BCNC), Dr Cullen O’Gorman performs:
- Nerve conduction studies (NCS) – Measures the strength and speed of electrical signals in nerves using small surface electrodes.
- Needle electromyography (EMG) – Uses a fine needle electrode inserted into a muscle to record electrical activity.
- Single fiber EMG – A specialised test for neuromuscular junction diseases, also performed with a needle electrode.
These tests are commonly used to assess nerve or muscle disorders and are performed in a controlled clinical setting to ensure patient comfort.

When May a Nerve Conduction Study Be Necessary?
Your doctor may recommend a nerve conduction study if you experience symptoms such as:
- Tingling or burning sensations
- Numbness
- Muscle weakness or fatigue
- Muscle pain or cramping
- Shooting limb pains
These symptoms may indicate nerve compression, nerve injury, or underlying neurological conditions that require further assessment.
