Dr John Phamnguyen is an experienced Neurologist and subspecialist Epileptologist at the Brisbane Clinical Neuroscience Centre (BCNC.
In addition to his private practice at BCNC, Dr. Phamnguyen holds public clinical appointments as a consultant epileptologist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Comprehensive Epilepsy Department and Mater Hospital Advanced Epilepsy Unit.
Following completion of his medical training at Griffith University, Dr. Phamnguyen completed his general neurology training at several tertiary hospitals in Sydney, including an epilepsy fellowship at Westmead Hospital. During his epilepsy fellowship, Dr. Phamnguyen gained extensive experience in the evaluation of patients with drug refractory epilepsy (i.e. epilepsy not controlled by medications). Dr. Phamnguyen is trained in surgical epilepsy with experience in stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) and technical evaluation of epilepsy neuroimaging (MRI/PET/SPECT). He is accredited by the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN) as a Level 3 EEG supervisor (highest level) and is involved in annual ANZAN clinical epilepsy and EEG teaching course for neurology trainees.
Research is an important aspect of Dr. Phamnguyen’s practice. He is currently completing his PhD at the Centre for Advanced Imaging with the University of Queensland, with his research focused on uncovering what structures and networks in the brain are responsible for tonic-clonic seizures (‘grand mal seizures’). Dr. Phamnguyen has presented his research at both national and international conferences. Dr. Phamnguyen is an active member of the Epilepsy Society of Australia (ESA), American Epilepsy Society (AES), and Young Epilepsy Section of the International League Against Epilepsy (YES-ILAE). Dr. Phamnguyen holds a senior lecturer appointment at the University of Queensland where he teaches medical students.
At BCNC, Dr. Phamnguyen provides comprehensive care for epilepsy patients including advanced diagnostic testing and a customised treatment plan to provide the best chance of controlling seizures and maximising quality of life for patients. At BCNC, Dr. Phamnguyen works closely with a team of neurosurgeons with overseas fellowship training in epilepsy surgery, with experience in the utilisation of minimally invasive epilepsy procedures Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) and resective surgeries with the aim to cure epilepsy. In cases where surgery is not an option, there are minimally invasive treatments for seizure reduction using neuromodulation (Vagal Nerve Stimulation), dietary therapies with the ketogenic diet, and clinical trials with new potential drug treatments for epilepsy.
